    - Building Services Technology

    High calibre students can further their studies in Engineering at local or overseas universities after successfully completing this programme.

    Highlights

    This programme provides a good foundation concepts in engineering education and prepares students for further studies or acquiring practical knowledge and skills to pursue a career in engineering fields by offering two streams of studies:

    • Electrical Engineering
    • Building Services Technology

    Professional Recognition

    Graduates of Electrical Engineering Stream of this programme is recognised by The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) of the Hong Kong S.A.R. Government as fulfilling the academic requirements for Grade A and Grade B Registered Electrical Worker (REW)*.

    Note: Graduates of Building Services Technology Stream of this programme have to complete the modules of Electromechanical Energy Conversion and Power Transmission and Distribution in order to fulfill the academic requirements for Grade A and Grade B registration*.

    *Graduates must also possess the relevant practical experience in electrical work as stipulated by The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD).

    Programme Objectives

    The programme aims to provide students with:

    • Professional ethics concepts;
    • Generic knowledge of languages, mathematics and interpersonal communication skills;
    • Hands-on training on engineering or creative project development on their chosen stream of studies in either:
      • Electrical Engineering stream which is related to electrical power generation, transmission and distribution; or
      • Building Services Technology stream which is related to building services installations.

    Intended Learning Outcomes

    On completion of the programme, students should be able to:

    • Communicate ideas in a manner appropriate to the circumstance using English languages (oral and written) in social and academic contexts;
    • Apply mathematical methods to solve engineering problems;
    • Design and implement engineering systems related to electrical or building automation systems;
    • Apply computer interfacing techniques in industrial systems;
    • Discuss the importance of professional ethics in the field of engineering;
    • Describe the major components of electrical installation in buildings.

    Programme Details

    The programme will be offered on a part-time basis and 3 trimesters will be allocated over each academic year.For year 1 module will have 24 contact hours and be taught in 3 hours per week (i.e. total 8 weeks). For year 2 modules, there will be 30 contact hours per module and it will be taught in 3 hours per week (i.e. total 10 weeks). For year 3 modules, except the modules Project, and Engineering and Society, there will be 36 contact hours per module and it will be taught in 3 hours per week (i.e. total 12 weeks).

    The language modules will be taught by face-to-face lectures, small group discussions, and case studies. For specialism modules, arrangement of teaching and learning approaches including face-to-face lectures, class discussions, group work, practical, site visit, field work, laboratory work, directed self-study and computer aided learning will be used for relevant technical modules, such as Computer Aided Design, Electrical and Electronic Principles, and Electromechanical Energy Conversion.

    Opportunities for Further Studies

    High calibre students can further their studies in Engineering at local or overseas universities after successfully completing this programme. In 2013-14, around 30% of graduates gained admission to local part-time engineering degree programmes (e.g.The Hong Kong Polytechnic University).
